Frequently asked questions about asbestos in gaskets
Where is asbestos found in gaskets?
Until asbestos was banned in 1993, asbestos was used in many ways. It is flexible, stable and extremely heat resistant.
In the case of gasket materials, you should always classify all gaskets and sealants installed before 1990 as potentially containing asbestos.
Particularly affected:
- fire doors
- soundproof doors
- pipe culverts
- flange gaskets for pipes, so-called IT gaskets, Klingerit
Asbestos was also used in so-called flat gaskets and in various sealing compounds, for example for joints.
